Another Ewww...

This is another simply icky article. Muslim women who are expected to be virgins when they marry are getting surgery to repair their hymens. Sometimes, as with that article on Christian purity balls, I just don’t understand what is with religious people.

That article actually made me feel sick. I can just about accept that virginity is seen as important in some cultures, but the fact that women are actually having SURGERY because of irrational people who want 'proof' of virginity, when either a broken or intact hymen isn't necessarily proof one way or the other, is just disgusting!

I'm totally with you, Teefus. Some good things come from religion (I guess...), but often, I'm just dismayed by the cruel and/or disgusting consequences.
Well, Kirsty, what about the fact that in our society, we get plastic surgery, too? Not necessarily to prove virginity, though I have read about some non-Muslims getting this surgery because their men like the feeling of "breaking them in", but because women often feel that they needed bigger breasts or a smaller nose or whatever else to atract a (male) partner. There's something messed up in regard to this, too.
